Guidelines for Creating Clean Photocopies and Scanned Documents from Source Materials
The process of creating high quality electronic documents typically involves copying all or part of a book, journal, or other print document and
scanning it to a PDF file. The goal of these guidelines is to create the best possible PDF files which can be saved and converted at a later date using
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) as needed for students using text to speech software in order to read printed materials.
Please refer to these guidelines if you are having difficulty converting PDF files and consider sharing them with faculty as needed.
Victor Reader Soft is installed on two computers in the ATL in Seelye and two computers in the ATL in Neilson.
For assistance with using the Victor Software with your audio CD's from RFBD, please review the following documents:

Many students use Kurzweil 3000's text to speech software and study skills tools to assist them with accessing their reading materials, taking notes
and highlighting content. Smith College has a network license of Kurzweil 3000 which allows students to access it from any of the computers in
both Seelye and Neilson Library's AT Labs.
This document provides instructions for accessing the network license of Kurzweil and walks you through opening a Kurzweil file, scanning, and accessing
the many tools available from the four toolbar menus: Instructions for Kurzweil 3000 at Smith .
Kurzweil has created a series of “How–to-Video Tutorials” which will walk you through the various tools that Kurzweil 3000 offers. These are 4-6 minute
video clips and we highly recommend you take a few moments to review them.
