<title>Wisdom, Compassion, Peace</title>
<itunes:author>His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso</itunes:author>
<itunes:subtitle>Education for Transformation</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Smith College, Hampshire College and the Tibetan Association of Western Massachusetts welcomed the 14th Dalai Lama to the Pioneer Valley on Wednesday, May 9, 2007. This momentous visit by the leader of the Tibetan people and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize recognizes the colleges’ thriving exchange program with exiled Tibetan scholars in India. Years ago, Hampshire began the Five College Tibetan Studies in India Program, and since then the Dalai Lama has followed its growth as Smith collaborated with Hampshire to sustain the annual academic exchange.

Smith President Carol T. Christ and Hampshire President Ralph J. Hexter hosted the daylong visit, during which the Dalai Lama delivered a talk to thousands of students, faculty, staff and invited guests from the two colleges and the Tibetan community. The event was broadcast live on public television station WGBY; the public was invited to view simulcasts of the address at John M. Greene Hall on the Smith campus and Franklin Patterson Hall at Hampshire College. A live webcast was also available.

<title>Women and Financial Independence - Financing Life</title>
<itunes:author>Randall Bartlett, Professor of Economics at Smith College.</itunes:author>
<itunes:subtitle>The Basics of Investing</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Successfully financing a life will almost always involve carrying some resources forward in time to provide for future needs—for retirement, for emergencies, for tuitions and braces, for vacations, or to donate to Smith. Once a decision to save has been reached, there is the added question, “In what assets should the savings be held?”

That effectively is what investing is all about.

Wise investing involves understanding the purposes for the investment and the characteristics of the assets in which resources are to be stored. Funds set aside for spring semester tuition and funds set aside to pay for retirement in forty years do not belong in the same investments.

How soon will you need this money? How serious is it if you can’t turn the asset into cash right away? How much will you be harmed if the asset has lost value when the time comes to sell it?

Presented by Randall Bartlett, Professor of Economics at Smith College

<title>Smith College Ivy Day 2008 Speech to Alumnae</title>
<itunes:author>Kasmin Holt, Class of 2008</itunes:author>
<itunes:subtitle>Speech to Alumnae by Kasmin Holt, Class of 2008</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Ivy Day has been a tradition at Smith for more than a century. The class of 1884 was the first to plant ivy as part of the ceremonies leading to their graduation, thus providing the day with its name. In early years, a speech was customarily delivered by a member of the graduating class. In more recent years, a student speaker has been invited to share words of appreciation for the alumnae.

Kasmin Holt, Class of 2008, was this year’s Ivy Day student speaker.</itunes:summary>
